Would also make a reasonably light weight tool. Wil have to crunch some numbers as to what it would take air cylinder diameter wise, am kinda guessing a 3 ton arbour with cheater equals a real world 5 tons? Sounds like too much to get from std shop air, but a hydraulic pack + accumulator would make quick work of it. Rivet squeezer sounds like just the correct toy for this.

Plus side seams to be alu rivets are just fine, end results painted drab green (like frigging everything from then) so metals not a issue. This very much would have been a air frame like component no doubt made on similar WW2 production lines.ĭigger Huck rivets were something i toyed with, but got shot down by the customer on both costs + looks, gotta be a metal domed head rivet, no other fasteners. Gotta be solid rivets with a dome head, both sides are visible and in a strange way, it matters more that it looks right than anything else. LOL yeah am well familiar with cleco's, problem is i have only ever done pop rivets in quantity before. One other thing on rivetting, if the assembly is "complex", invest in some clecos and cleco pliers so you can align everything before starting to rivet, which will pull the metal around somewhat if you don't cleco and do the first few rivets in a "pattern" to minimize distortion and creeping of the parts. (IOW if this is for style and appearance more than structural/engineering that would indicate steel) Just mentioning because you said more or less "any metal" So if you can go to Al, it might make some machining, bending, and assembly ops easier/faster even if the material costs more. With a helper to slide the material along, it went about as fast as I could haul down on a cheater pipe on the press handle. (so the die shoe pressed the parts together, then the punch set the rivet). I rigged up a 3 ton arbor press and made a small spring loaded die to fit the end of it. Can i just make the mother of all G clamps and squeeze them to fully formed with that? If so any ideas of tonnage? (ruff guess but rivets some were about 3/16" stem dia) I probably only need about 12" of reach? making it hydraulic is also not a issue.Ī number of years ago I made some ventilation accessories for the Pentagon for a specific application that had quite a few 1/4" dome head rivets in them.

What's the best option for setting thousands of solid rivets? I have only ever used rivet snaps and hammers and it makes my arms ache and my ears deaf just contemplating going this way for this kinda quantity. Pop rivets are not a option (has to be vintage 1940's style finished, but can use anything i want to make it). Rivets are looking like they have to be domed heads of some kind, exact metal seams to be my call though as do size within limits.

I have a customer with a proven demand (but zero currently produced but a truly vast waiting list at a good price point) for a sheet skinned metal ribbed structure that has to have the metal skin riveted to the steel frame work (think bout 200 rivets a item). This projects only at the feasibility stage.
